pyrobutts: Sit. Stay. Good Kaiju.
What if… Newt’s first Drift triggered something on the other side? It caused one of the kaiju to break from the hivemind, and then you have Otachi. Lost, alone in her own head, Otachi, following Leatherback through the Breach. And the only thing in her head is the heartbeat of her child and a scared frightened tiny voice in the corner of her head.
And she follows that voice because it’s the only thing she knows anymore and it must be good because SHE CAN HEAR HIM. And wants him, wants to find him. And she does, but she finds him cowering and afraid beneath the ground and then all she feels is, maybe a little awe, but mostly fear. Fear is rejection. A feeling of NOT WANTING.
She fights. And dies. Otachi dies knowing only a forced rejection from the hivemind and then an emotional rejection from the voice in her head. She dies unwanted and unloved and leaves only a ghost of a memory of her short life in Newt’s mind. There’s a hope that her child will live, but they too die, but with no ghost. The infant kaiju’s memory burned out and devoured by the forced Drift as it’s brain decayed.
